FAQ

Do I need a medical referral?

It is not necessary, however, it is recommended to get one from you GP. If you have had a sleep study please bring a copy of the results with you.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring any records, Drs’ letter of referral or reports, allergy results, x-rays and most importantly, sleep study results if you have them. If you are upgrading your old device to a new one please bring it with you.

What happens during my appointment?

We will take a complete medical history. You will discuss with Dr Donegan what you hope to achieve from treatment. Dr Donegan will examine your mouth, airway, TMJs and take some clinical measurements. For some patients, photographs are taken. Then together you will discuss what is realistic and achievable with an oral device. Dr Donegan will then provide you with more information on how the device is designed and risks, hazards or potential complications involved in treatment. During this appointment, enough time has been allocated for you to proceed, should you choose and be suitable for treatment.

What is the cost of an oral appliance?

This varies, depending on design and device options suited to your problem. For further information, please contact (02) 9419 5051.

Will Medicare cover my treatment?

No. Although a medical problem, the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea and snoring with an oral device is dental treatment provided by only a Dentist.

Can I use my private health fund for an oral appliance / device?

We recommend you liaise with your health fund and check your policy and level of cover. Dr Donegan would need to take a thorough medical history and physical examination before item numbers could be provided to you if you are eligible.

Do I need to speak to my Dentist?

There is no need, however, should you want correspondence to be sent to your Dentist, it can be arranged. Copies of letters to your GP and / or referring specialist can include your Dentist at your request.

I’m planning some dental treatment. Can I still have an oral device?

Yes. Often simple dental treatment is without issue. In some cases, for example planning for an implant or veneers, a provisional device can be provided or modification of the device can be made to accommodate the new implant crown. NB this modification should be made only by Dr Donegan.

I have had a device made elsewhere. What do I do?

No problem, bring it in. If you are happy with the device it can be replicated. If you have issues with a new or existing device we can discuss this with you and advise you further.

What is the preferred oral device?

The device that is customised specifically for you.

I already wear a bite guard at night. Does that matter?

Often, patients with bruxism or joint issues and those who are wearing a splint at night make the transition to oral appliance quite well. Patients with very mild apnoea often time share with their old splint.

I have fixed orthodontic retainers. Can I still have an oral appliance to treat my snoring / OSA?

Absolutely. The technician will accommodate a relieving space for the fixed retainer/s. For further advice regarding removable appliances, please contact us for an assessment.

What is the minimum age for an oral appliance?

Ideally, 18. Adolescents with a full permanent dentition and completed growth can have an oral device to treat apnoea but must have parental consent and attend with a parent.
